Best Battery for a 5kW or 10kW Solar System in Pakistan

A 5kW hybrid solar inverter is usually 48V, so it needs a 48V battery bank — four 12V tubular batteries in series as a minimum, more in parallel for real overnight use, or a 48V lithium unit. A 10kW system often runs one or two 48V inverters and needs a substantially larger bank. The right size depends on how much you use at night, not the panel kW.

Quick summary

  • 5kW inverter: almost always 48V → 4 × 12V batteries per series string.
  • 10kW: one large or two 48V inverters → a bigger bank, often lithium for the daily cycling.
  • Battery size is set by your NIGHT-TIME kWh, not the panel size.
  • Tubular is the value choice; lithium wins for heavy daily cycling and space.

Panel kW does not size the battery

A common mistake is to match the battery to the panels — “10kW of panels, so a huge battery.” The panels decide how fast you generate during the day. The battery only has to cover what you use when the sun is not shining: evening, night and cloudy spells. A house with 10kW of panels but modest night use needs a smaller bank than a house with 5kW of panels running ACs all night.

Step 1: the inverter fixes the voltage

  • Most 5kW hybrid inverters are 48V — so the battery bank is 48V, meaning four 12V batteries in series per string.
  • 10kW is usually one high-voltage inverter or two 5kW units, still on a 48V (or higher, for HV lithium) bank.
  • Some HV lithium systems run at 100–400V — those use a matched lithium tower, not lead-acid.

Check the inverter’s battery-voltage spec before buying anything.

Step 2: your night-time usage sizes the capacity

Work out, roughly, the kWh you use between sunset and sunrise:

  • Fans, lights, TV, routers, chargers overnight: often 2–4 kWh.
  • Add a fridge + deep freezer: +1.5–3 kWh.
  • Add one inverter AC for part of the night: +2–5 kWh.

Then size the usable battery capacity to cover that with margin. Usable capacity for lead-acid is only about 50% of the rated Ah (to protect life); for lithium it is 80–90%. This is a big reason lithium is popular for solar despite the price.

Typical banks

  • 5kW, light night use (backup only): a 48V string of four tubular batteries (185–220 Ah).
  • 5kW, moderate night use (fridge + fans + some AC): two paralleled 48V tubular strings, or a 5–10 kWh lithium unit.
  • 10kW, whole-house night use: a 10–20 kWh lithium bank is usually the practical choice; a lead-acid equivalent is very large.

Installation matters as much as the battery

Correct cable sizing, proper lugs, a ventilated and shaded location, matched batteries, and the inverter’s charge and cut-off voltages set for the exact battery type — get any of these wrong and even a good bank fails early. We handle all of it.

Get it sized

Send your inverter make and model, its battery voltage, your panel kW, and roughly what you run at night and for how long. We will recommend tubular or lithium, the capacity and configuration, quote the price after old-battery exchange where applicable, and install it across Lahore.

Frequently asked questions

How many batteries does a 5kW solar inverter need?

Most 5kW hybrid inverters are 48V, so they need four 12V batteries in series as a minimum string — more strings in parallel for real overnight use. Or a matched 48V lithium unit. Check your inverter's battery-voltage spec.

Does a 10kW system need a bigger battery than a 5kW system?

Only if you use more at night. The battery covers night-time and cloudy-spell usage, not the panel output. A 10kW-panel house with modest night use can need a smaller bank than a 5kW house running ACs all night.

Should I use tubular or lithium for solar?

Tubular is the lower-cost choice for backup-focused use and a tighter budget. Lithium gives far more usable capacity, much longer life, and compact size — worth it for heavy daily cycling or where space is limited.

Why can I only use half of a lead-acid battery's capacity?

Discharging lead-acid below about 50% repeatedly shortens its life sharply. So you size the bank at roughly double your real need. Lithium can safely use 80–90%, which is why the same usable capacity needs less lithium.

Can you install and configure the solar battery bank?

Yes — cable sizing, lugs, a ventilated shaded location, matched batteries, and the inverter's charge and low-voltage cut-off set for the exact battery type. We do the whole job across Lahore.
