7 Warning Signs Your Car Battery Is About to Die
A car battery about to fail shows it in seven ways: the engine cranks slowly, headlights dim at idle, you hear rapid clicking when you turn the key, the dashboard battery light comes on, the battery case looks swollen, there is a rotten-egg smell near the bonnet, or the battery is simply more than 2–3 years old. One sign means test it soon; two or more means replace it before it strands you.
Quick summary
- Slow / lazy engine crank, especially at night
- Headlights and dashboard lights dim at idle, brighten when you rev
- Rapid clicking sound when you turn the key
- Dashboard battery warning light
- Swollen or bulging battery case
- Rotten-egg (sulphur) smell around the battery
- Battery is over 2–3 years old in Lahore's heat
1. The engine cranks slowly
This is the most common first sign. When you turn the key, the starter turns the engine over more slowly than usual — a tired “rrr…rrr…rrr” instead of a quick spin. It is usually worse at night, in cold mornings, or after the AC and headlights have been running, because the battery has less reserve. A healthy battery cranks the same every time. If yours is getting lazy, it is losing capacity.
2. Dim lights at idle
Start the car and look at the headlights against a wall, or watch the dashboard brightness. If the lights are dim when the engine is idling and get brighter when you rev, the battery is struggling to hold voltage and the alternator is doing all the work. Interior lights that fade when you crank the engine point the same way.
3. Rapid clicking when you turn the key
A fast click-click-click-click and no crank means the battery has enough charge to trigger the starter solenoid but not enough current to actually turn the engine. At this point the car will not start on its own. It can sometimes be jump-started once, but a battery that has reached the clicking stage is almost always finished.
4. The dashboard battery light
The red battery-shaped light on the dashboard usually means a charging-system fault — it can be the battery, the alternator, or a loose or corroded terminal. If it comes on while driving, get the charging system tested. Do not ignore it: if the alternator has stopped charging, the car is running on battery alone and will stop within a few kilometres.
5. A swollen battery case
Open the bonnet and look at the battery. If the sides are bulging or the top is puffed up, the battery has been overcharged or has overheated — very common in Lahore's summer. A swollen battery has permanent internal damage and should be replaced immediately; it can leak acid or, rarely, rupture.
6. A rotten-egg smell
A sharp sulphur or rotten-egg smell near the battery means it is venting hydrogen sulphide gas — a sign of an internal short or serious overcharging. You may also see white or blue-green powder on the terminals. Both mean the battery is on its way out and the terminals need cleaning or the battery replacing.
7. The battery is more than 2–3 years old
Age alone is a warning. In cooler countries a battery lasts 4–5 years; in Lahore's heat, 2–3 years is normal. Under-bonnet temperatures in a Pakistani summer bake the plates and speed up water loss. If you do not know how old your battery is, check the sticker or ask us to read the date code — anything past two years should be load-tested before the next summer.
Battery or alternator? A quick check
- Hard to start, runs fine once started → almost always the battery.
- Starts fine, then dies while driving, or the battery light stays on → likely the alternator or charging system.
- Not sure → a 30-second voltage test settles it. We do this free at the shop or at your car.

How many years does a car battery last in Pakistan?
In Lahore's climate, most car batteries last about 2 to 3 years. High under-bonnet heat in summer shortens battery life compared with cooler countries, so treat anything past 2 years as due for a check.
Can a weak battery still start the car sometimes?
Yes. A failing battery often starts the car fine in the morning and struggles at night or after the AC has been running. Intermittent slow cranking is one of the clearest signs it is near the end.
Is it the battery or the alternator?
If the car struggles to start but runs fine once started, it is usually the battery. If the battery warning light stays on while driving or the car dies after starting, the alternator or charging system may be the problem. A free voltage test tells you which.
